Why Teach at Our School?
Teaching at Blanca Jeannette Kawas Bilingual School is a rewarding opportunity for international, native English-speaking volunteers to live and work in a Honduran community. Our local and volunteer staff share the experiences of coming to a foreign country to live and work, and they plan classes together, go out together in Tela, and travel around Honduras and Central America on breaks.
Volunteering abroad offers incredible challenges and rewards. It can be a deeply enriching experience that teaches flexibility, humility and self-reliance. Our volunteers are eager for the experience and value of working with the children, getting to know the community, being immersed in another culture, and creating friendships with other volunteers.
Volunteer Qualifications
We give preference to candidates with teaching experience at any level. However, we also accept candidates from any background and life stage. The nature of volunteering abroad means that our teachers tend to come to us within a few years of college or university graduation or at a later stage in life when they change or end careers. At the minimum, all of our teachers have taught or tutored in some capacity, and they must demonstrate a dedication to living and working abroad.
Teachers must be mature, respectful of the values of a small Honduran town, and ready to take on the responsibility of educating our children. Volunteering in Tela is a fun experience, but it is a serious job, not a vacation. Because our foreign teachers teach in English, Spanish language skills are not required. However, learning Spanish during your stay in Honduras will enrich your experience.
Benefits Provided to Volunteers
Volunteer teachers are provided free accommodations.Foreign teachers will have 50% coverage for doctor’s fees and medication.. There is no dental or optical coverage. There are many excellent doctors in town, a public clinic and several small private clinics in addition to a basic emergency center. In case of hospitalization or bigger emergencies, there are excellent hospitals in San Pedro Sula, a couple of hours away by ambulance.
The Policy does NOT cover evacuation to your home country, so the school recommends you take out this coverage if you feel it is necessary. Also consider having some sort of coverage for your home country in the event of a serious emergency or illness and treatment back home would be preferred.
Language Requirements
It is not necessary to speak Spanish, though coming to Honduras would provide you with a wonderful opportunity to practice.
